JoJo’s Pediatric Rehabilitation Unit Will Enable ChildServe to Help More Kids Like Zoey

JoJo's Pediatric Rehabilitation Unit is the third and final project of the Forward Together campaign. This state-of-the-art inpatient rehabilitation medicine unit will be the only pediatric program of its kind in Iowa.

Before Zoey moved home, her team at ChildServe held a “Clap Out” event where they celebrated how hard she worked in therapy, and all the new skills she had gained in just a few short weeks.

“This new unit will allow ChildServe to enhance care for children with injuries, impairments and other rehabilitation needs as they transition from hospital to home,” said ChildServe CEO Teri Wahlig, M.D. “Kids who come through our doors for inpatient rehabilitation have a wide range of needs, but we meet them where they’re at and help them take the next step forward.”

Construction is underway, and the project is expected to be completed in Spring 2022. We are so grateful to all of the Forward Together campaign donors for helping us expand and give more children access to our one-of-a-kind rehabilitation program.

JoJo’s Pediatric Rehabilitation Unit will include unique features that make it the only program of its kind in Iowa.

  • This intensive rehabilitation program is designed for infants, children and teens to regain daily living skills, strength and independence after surgery, injury or accident.
  • Our areas of rehabilitation expertise include: pediatric brain injury, multi-trauma, spinal cord, burn and wound, orthopedic and post-NICU care.
  • We provide access to cutting-edge rehabilitation technology found in few other places in the country.
  • As ChildServe’s medical director and the only board-certified pediatric physiatrist in Iowa, Dr. Fred Klingbeil oversees treatment beginning while children are in the hospital and continuing throughout their time at ChildServe. Children who receive inpatient care can transition to our outpatient program when they’re ready to move home. This continuum of care results in more cohesive care for families and improved outcomes for children.
